Political pundits around Korea are noting that voter turnout for Wednesday’s general election was 8% higher than last year, at 54.3%. What might have caused this (minor) increase in voter turnout? According to the number of views a recently-released video has racked up since it went viral, pop-artist Nancy Lang might be part of the answer. When it comes to making a striking political statement, it seems that breast really is best. Nancy paraded around Seoul in the days preceding the election in a white bikini, accessorized with a pair of killer red stilettos and the word “LOVE” emblazoned across her ample assets. But even these weren’t her most prominent accessory — rather it was the stuffed-toy cat that Nancy always has attached to her left shoulder.

According to Nancy’s blog, her appearance was meant to mimic that of a round card girl during a big boxing fight which she likened to the general election, and was an attempt to encourage people to support democracy by voting. Explaining the “ang” stamp that she carried with her, Nancy’s blog states:
‘Ang’ sums up cutie, sexy, kitty, Nancy in a single word, and she says it signifies the positive energy of a new era. She wrote LOVE directly over her bikini in lipstick, and this encapsulates her continual wish for us to create a world full of with love, peace and art. Nancy Lang explained that since citizens are all individual masters of democracy, they have to affirm their power through the vote, and she thinks that in particular it would be great if all young people voted.

When an article detailing Nancy’s antics from the was reposted on Daum, some netizens applauded Nancy’s actions, while some left somewhat “ang”ry at the fact that the artist besmirched the much-revered statue of King Sejong the Great, the creator of the Korean alphabet (hangul) and the face of the ten-thousand won note.

The irony of the whole situation is that Nancy herself is apparently not even eligible to vote: she is still a US citizen, having been born in New York despite spending most of her childhood in Korea.
